About Us
The FLINT team is a group of creators, thinkers, and doers. It includes: a talented designer with a decade of industrial design experience in Japan and a sharp eye for minimalistic design and storytelling; a Materials Engineer with an MBA who focuses on product integrity and strategy; and a talented artist with an MBA who brings bold ideas to life and fronts as a heavy metal basist in his spare time. Together, they combine design, engineering, and creativity to build products that spark connection, adventure, and joy.
Our Story
FLINT began in 2015 with the first DIY prototype, a backpack-friendly BBQ that was oversized but functional enough to grill for friends at the beach. Although the design was rough, it proved the concept.
The second iteration featured smaller dimensions, transport latches to seal in grease, and a perforated outer shell for burn protection (which wasn’t fully effective). A stainless steel burner box was added but ended up too heavy. Key improvements planned included reducing size and weight, adding legs for ground clearance, and improving grease flow to prevent smoke.
By the third version, FLINT had improved its size, weight, and performance. It even traveled to Hawaii!
What kept FLINT moving forward was the enthusiasm people showed whenever I was grilling at the beach, after hockey games, at the ballpark, or out with friends. Grilling with friends was so easy and brought so much joy, we took it everywhere and it never felt like a burden.
After engaging multiple manufacturers, we partnered in 2023 with one that specializes in portable gas BBQs. Their capabilities, expertise, and quality helped bring FLINT to life for everyday adventurers like you. We dove into research and development to refine its look, feel, performance, and function. After testing FLINT across a range of real-world adventures, it’s now ready for production.
